CEREC GOES BEYOND RESTORATION

The term CEREC stands for Ceramic Reconstruction. It is a highly innovative technology based on the CAD/CAM dentistry method. The Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing method allows for the creation of single dental restorations in ceramic with a high aesthetic level. These are done quickly and precisely at the treatment site, minimizing the margins of error that can occur with traditional treatments.

The CEREC system allows for restorative procedures without using metal materials. The material used in this type of treatment is ceramic, which has several important advantages:

It is durable over time,
It is absolutely biocompatible,
It can more than satisfactorily simulate the natural color of the patient’s teeth.

How does CEREC technology work?

Thanks to CEREC Sirona, great strides have been made in dentistry compared to the past. Previously, with the traditional method, acquiring a dental impression from the patient to send to the laboratory was necessary for any dental restoration procedure. The laboratory would then produce the artifact in a relatively long time. This process required the patient to undergo an unspecified number of dental sessions, with the discomfort of the classic impression.

Thanks to CEREC technology, it is possible to acquire an optical impression of the entire oral cavity of the patient through a 3D intraoral camera. This equipment allows for extremely precise and rapid image capture.

CAD/CAM dentistry at the base of the CEREC system

CAD/CAM dentistry allows for the dental restoration to be designed on a computer. During treatment, the dental physicians of the Motta Jones Rossi & Associates dental practice perform all the processes leading to the dental implant in a single session. This goes from digital images to take the patient’s teeth impression, to the 3D construction of the artifact, to the milling process.

Before the advent of CEREC Sirona, all this took place over several sessions and required retaking the impression if the work was not accurate. Based on the images captured by the dentist using the intraoral camera, the CEREC technology creates a 3D model of the tooth’s situation. We use this model to virtually construct the tooth restoration and then proceed to the production of the dental artifact.

CEREC in orthodontics

In our associated dental practice in Milan, we also use the CEREC Sirona system in orthodontics. The innovative CEREC technology allows us to quickly create digital models of the entire mandibular and maxillary arch of the patient.

These models are useful in the design and creation of orthodontic appliances, both for adults and children. An example is the production of Invisalign, the so-called transparent mask to solve the problem of teeth that are not perfectly aligned in a non-invasive way.

The great advantage of CEREC, even in orthodontics, is the ability to reduce the amount of time required for treatment. Traditional methods require sending the impressions to a laboratory that creates the model in silicone or plaster. The CEREC Sirona system saves time and allows for timely intervention to resolve the patient’s discomfort.
